Summer is here, summer is here thank goodness!
With the weather getting warmer we tend to spend more time outdoors, and our skin will need sun protection. SPF is not just for summer though, you should be protecting your skin all year round especially if you live someplace warm like I do. You wouldn't want sun spots or premature wrinkles, right? Now before you go off and buy just any SPF I want to share with you 4 natural, vegan and reef safe sunscreens. I have been testing these out prior to summer so that I can share my thoughts on this post just in time for summer.
What is reef safe? And why is it important?
I'm sure most of you have heard of reef safe sunscreens, they've been around for a long time. But the term reef safe recently got some major popularity after reports of toxic chemical ingredients in regular sunscreen products showed they are affecting the reefs by bleaching the coral among other bad things. Hawaii recently became the first state to ban toxic UV chemical sunscreens and are pushing for reef safe alternatives.
Reef safe just means that it is safe to use while in the ocean, as the ingredients in the sunscreen won't harm the reefs. Ingredients to look for are, non-nano mineral zinc oxide & titanium dioxide are both active ingredients in sunscreen and also reef safe. What to avoid, oxybenzone, octinoxate (among others) are both ingredients considered environmental pollutants.
MyChelle has a great post on the importance of reef safe sunscreens, which you can find here. I encourage you to do your own research on this important topic.
With that said, let's talk about good sunscreens for you and the environment.
My favorite facial non-tinted sunscreen at the moment is DermaE's Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30. This is an oil-free formula that leaves no white cast or oily residue. To me, it feels more like a gel, a tad moisturizing but I still add a lightweight moisturizer prior to applying it. It works perfectly for my combo skin and it doesn't make it oily, which is a huge plus in the summer.
The Liquid Tint SPF 50 from MyChelle is my favorite tinted SPF and a must in my collection. I've talked about this before on my YouTube channel and --->here<--- as well. But I wanted to mention it again because it's that good. These tints come in Nude, Natural Tan and now a non-tinted version too. Love the formula and it actually works, I've used it on two vacays and I didn't get any sunburns.
Seriously Fab Zinc it Over Sunscreen Facial Mist SPF 25 is a new fave. SPF mists are all the rave right now and this one is awesome. It's so easy to use you just shake it and spray it. You can use on top of makeup or by itself. They offer a scented one that has a floral scent, and now an unscented version. Not only is it reef safe its also enriched with antioxidants, phytonutrients, and other great ingredients. This mist leaves no white cast but it does add a dewy glow. Took this mist on my last vacay and was reaching for it often. I found it perfect to spray after coming out of the water instead of reapplying my lotion SPF, it was just so easy breezy.
Last but not least, the MyChelle Replenishing Solar Defense SPF 30. MyChelle carries a few reef safe and vegan sunscreens whether it's for the face or body. This titanium dioxide free formula is more moisturizing and hydrating compared to the DermaE SPF. I use this one instead of a moisturizer and works great, and no white cast!
There you have it 4 awesome reef safe sunscreens! Of course, there are lots more options out there. None of these break me out, they all wear nicely and play well with makeup. What is your go-to sunscreen? Do tell!
I also did a post on sunscreens two years ago, you can read all about them ---> here <--- if you want to read about them.
Thanks for stopping by, don't forget you wear your sun protection, sunnies, and even a hat!
